Study materials are online. This site features an interactive format with links to Merriam-Webster definitions and pronunciations, challenge words for advanced spellers, activities to promote a deeper understanding of the English language, and printable study lists.
Use the log-in and password you receive from Scripps to get your online copy of the 2019 School Pronouncer Guide, plus three grade-specific levels of the new Classroom Pronouncer Guide. Set a date, a location, and obtain officials for the school spelling bee.
Make copies of the Appeal Form for use in the school bee. Print certificates and seek donations for prizes for top spellers (optional). Turn in the School Winner Form to the County Coordinator by fax, email, or mail and confirm receipt of the form.

Check to be sure all public and private schools in the county have received information letters from the Scripps National Spelling Bee office and the Alabama Spelling Bee.
Contact the Alabama Spelling Bee office if a duplicate is needed. Check to be sure all participating public and private schools have enrolled with Scripps. Refer home school inquiries to the Home School Coordinator. If your county has district bees, be sure a coordinator is in place to conduct area bees and meet deadlines. Receive School Winner Forms and check on any school which fails to turn in a form.
Submit a list of contestants’ and school names to the spelling bee office one week prior to the county bee. Schools must be enrolled with Scripps to participate in the county bee.
The Alabama Spelling Bee office will have a list of enrolled schools. Set a date, location, and obtain officials for the district spelling bee and inform school coordinators. Home School Coordinators Home-schooled students compete in home-school district spelling bees throughout the state. Top district home-school spellers advance to the final home-school “county” bee. The winner of the final home-school bee competes in the Alabama Spelling Bee in Birmingham.
Home-school students must be enrolled with Scripps National Spelling Bee in order to compete. See Enrollment page for specific enrollment instructions. Contact your Home School Coordinator for details on district bees and competition sites. Judges and Pronouncers. The Pronouncers and Judges are responsible for knowing the rules and procedures as outlined on this website. The Pronouncer(s) is(are) responsible for pronouncing and defining words, and using words in a sentence at the speller’s request.
District Spelling Bee Word List
The Judges are responsible for making sure each speller understands the pronouncer and correctly pronounces the word for the judges. The judges determine whether the contestant has spelled the word correctly. The Judges are responsible for handling all appeals. Appeals must be handled at the end of each round until there are only five spellers, when the appeal must be handled immediately. See Rules for Local Spelling Bees for details. The Judges are in complete control of the contest. Their decisions shall be final on all questions.
