Hello everybody! I'm a new member to your forum. As the title says,i own a Honda XLR 250 Baja, the first one to be presented by Honda,in November 1987.Mine specifically, was made in September 1988. The bike's history is pretty interesting, and i thought you might want to hear it.That's why i'm opening the thread in the first place:iconwink: So basically, the Honda XLR 250 Baja as some of you may know was produced only for the japanese domestic market. But as you know, many bikes which were produced for the japanese domestic market only, were sold, used,to people outside Japan. These bikes are what we call, the Grey Import bikes. So somehow,my Baja was sold to someone here, where i live.I live in Greece by the way!

The bike must have come here on a ship all the way from Japan. After that, maybe someone bought it and resold it to the dealer my father got it from,or it was directly sold to the dealer.A bit complicated story, sadly i will never know who owned the bike back in Japan and here.but anyway! My father bought the bike from a local motorcycle dealer, used of course. This was somewhere between 1990-1993.He used it a lot at his work, for many years. Then he bought a car,so it was a bit useless to him.So eventually, more people at work started using the bike. And this deteriorated its condition a lot, they didn't take any care of the bike sadly:sad: Eventyally, the bike broke down due to lack of proper maintenance and was left abandoned for some years. That must have happened somewhere around 2005-2007.

That's where i fit in the story! One day,i visited my father's work place and saw the bike!

It wasn't something unknown to me,but i hadn't seen it since i was a little child.I really liked it,so some months later,i convinced my father to bring the bike home and i would make her work again! That's what i'm doing right in,i'm rebuilding the bike. It's not easy, because i have never had a bike before, and of course, never have i restored one.But im confident that soon enough,i will make her work again! If you want a picture of how it was when i got it,i can post one.don't ask me how it is now though,it's all pieces in the basement at the moment:001tongue: Now,i would really appreciate it if you share with me any info you might know about the bike. Hi Nichirin Welcome to the site. Which part of Greece are you living in? I have a 1988 XLR-250R(MD-20) kickstart model, nearly the same as the Baja, but without the big headlight.

I don't use it much nowadays, but it will start every time I need it. Such a simple lightweight bike and Honda build quality. I really think it could last forever.

Photos are always welcome. Here's mine if you need any inspiration to get yours running again, feel free to ask any questions you want. Good luck with the rebuild! You could try to see if that helps. I used to have an old XLR 250.

Loved it, totally indestructible. Crashed it in an enduro race in Chiba snapping my foot in 3 places, a friend then continued to ride the bike as his had packed up! Wish my body was as tough as that Honda was. Oh yeah, another enduro it dropped the collar on the valve stem, but still ran for another hour! It was a bit tappetty should we say and down on power, but still didn't give up the ghost. Loved that bike.

Probably the easiest and perhaps best solution would be to look for a service manual for the same generation bike on Ebay. Here is a Clymer manual And here is a Honda service manual for the 1984-1987 XL250R. Which judging from photos looks to be basically the same bike, but verify that yourself.

Honda Baja goes back further than that. My Japanese friend bought one when they first came out in 1983 or '84, don't know if it was a XLR or not but it was surely a Baja, I had a standard red Honda XL 250 at the time and we used to go riding a lot. I got a XL 400 later, super tough bikes.

My friend lent me his bike many times and I loved riding that Baja, it was real light and set up high and had good torque so it was perfect in traffic. Anyway good luck with the bike. You could try to see if that helps.

Loved that bike. Yep, pretty much indestructible. I had an 87 XR250R which I ran mostly as a woods bike (no plate) when I was a teenager. 1997 chevy s10 repair manual. Once on a long course, I had a mid-air head-on collision with a guy on an 90 CR250R, who riding this opposite way on the course.

Happened quick as the other side of the hill was blind. After the hit, I saw stars (literally). When I got up i saw the XR250R had a bent front disc rotor but rideable. The CR250R had busted triple clamps & fork tubes which split apart.not rideable, haha. Ahh, those were the days!

Anyway good luck with the bike. Sorry for correcting you,but there was no XLR 250 Baja before 1987.The first Baja to be presented by Honda, was indeed in 20 November 1987.Here's the official announcement: Maybe you are mistaking the double headlight format with an older Honda enduro bike.Could it be the Honda XL 600 LM? Thank you all for helping me find a manual.I'll make i decision soon The XLR is indeed very reliable, but there's usually an issue with the cylinder head cover cracking around the area where the bolts are,and after that there's an oil leak.Happened to mine as well, had to change it Some say that the RFVC design has too many moving parts and this causes the problem, but that hasn't been proved. The first Baja to be presented by Honda, was indeed in 20 November 1987.

No, it wasn't. I rode a single headlight 250 Honda Baja here in Japan in 1983. Maybe you are mistaking the double headlight format with an older Honda enduro bike.Could it be the Honda XL 600 LM?

No, it couldn't. My Japanese friend, who happened to be my roommate, bought the 250 Honda Baja in 1983, it said Baja on the tank. I rode it many times. Hey, he said it might not have been an XLR.
